Professor for Japanese Studies at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg for economy, politics and society of modern Japan. She has been a guest professor at the Nagoya City University and the University of Tokyo. She has also been a visiting scholar at the Waseda University of Tokyo, the University of Niigata, the University of Senshu and the University of Tsukuba. She is a member of the foundation council of the Japanese-German Centre of Berlin, member of the academic advisory board, German Institute for Japanese Studies, Tokyo, and a member of the board of the German Society for Asian Studies.

Since 2006 she is member of the board of the Graduate School „Society and Culture in Motion“, Halle University, since 2007 spokesperson of the German-Japanese Graduate School „Formation and Change of Civil Society in Germany and Japan“, sponsored by DFG and JSPS, a joint project with Tokyo University, and since 2008 she works a an academic advisor with the Graduate School on Social inequality ( Böckler Foundation).

She is a member of the German-Japanese Society for Social Sciences, the German Association for Social Science Research on Japan (VSJF), the German Association for Asian Studies (DGA), the German Association for Japanese Studies (GJF), and the European Japan Experts Association (EJEA).
